GLOSSARY TERM

Affiliate Licensing / Registration

Several jurisdictions regulate the marketers directly: various US states require affiliate licensing or registration (with fees and disclosures), Romania lists affiliates, and other markets impose registration-lite duties via operator liability.

What it changes

Licensed-affiliate regimes formalize the industry: barriers to entry rise, anonymous operations exit, and operators gain a compliance filter (“licensed in NJ” becomes a partnership prerequisite). For affiliates, multi-state US expansion is a licensing project with real legal cost — and a moat once completed. Programs should track partner license status as structured data; in these markets an unlicensed affiliate isn’t a lead, it’s a liability.
