Well, we all know what a crazy world we live in and it becomes especially crazy if you live in Chicago and searching for a job. In fact, over the past years, finding a good job has become a real nightmare, which is why many people often stay in their position and do not leave the job, out of fear they might not find anything better. I think soon the demand for jobs in Chicago will raise again and then it will be even harder to find a great place to work at. Oh well, that is life!

John McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin for his VP nominee calls into serious question his judgment. It also calls into question his talking points of “putting the country first,” “experience,” & “ready to lead.” On top of that it actually greatly contradicts his reputation as a so called “maverick.”

It now appears clear that McCain’s choice of Palin was a rash decision made only after his first choice of Joe Lieberman was shot down by the far right wing of the Republican party. The McCain campaign did not properly look into Palin’s background. And in fact McCain had met Palin only one time before he invited her to be his VP.

Considering the importance of a the Vice Presidential position (9 times in our nation’s history the Vice President has had to fill in and become President) this lack of due diligence in selecting his VP is a substantial example of McCain’s lack of judgment.

While the McCain campaign has talked endlessly of “putting the country first,” the fact is that by selecting Sarah Palin entirely for political reasons, he has done anything but that. The #1 criteria for a VP should be that he or she can fill in and become President at any moment. Sarah Palin clearly fails that criteria.

The McCain campaign has also been making the case against Barack Obama largely based on what they call his lack of experience. They have questioned whether Obama is “ready to lead” over and over again. How can they make this argument against Barack Obama (and his three years of experience on the foreign relations committee) when Palin has absolutely no foreign policy experience at all.

The McCain campaign has thrown away their best arguments against Barack Obama with their choice of Palin and furthermore they’ve shown what a sham their arguments were in the first place. They obviously didn’t believe them or they wouldn’t have chosen someone with no experience to be one 72 year old heartbeat away from the Presidency.

Another  week, another political convention.  This week kicks off the Republican National Convention that will see the nomination of John McCain for President and Sarah Palin for Vice-President, though the schedule is in flux with Hurricane Gustav that has landed in Louisiana.

McCain named Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, as his running mate on August 29th.  She was more or less a surprise pick.  She is not well known on the national scene, at least from a media perspective.

The first day of the convention was greatly abbreviated.  The only real speakers were Laura Bush and Cindy McCain putting out a call for help for the areas affected by Gustav.  They also made announcements of some projects that the Republicans will be undertaking to help victims of Gustav.  This fit with the theme for the day:  Service.

The theme for Tuesday is Reform.  The keynote speech is supposed to be given by Rudy Guiliani.   Also, Mike Huckabee, one of McCain’s opponents, and five other current and former Governors will be speaking.  There will be several other governors speaking over the remaining days.

Wednesday the theme will be Prosperity.  Palin will be speaking that night and it will give her a chance to let America know her.  Also speaking will be Mitt Romney, Meg Whitman, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, and possibly Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal.   It is kind of odd though that the Republican website for the convention hasn’t been updated with Palin’s name.

Thursday will be John McCain’s day.  The theme for the final day of the convention is Peace.   The day is supposed to showcase McCain’s idea of American goodwill and our pursuit of peace in the world.  McCain tops off the evening with his acceptance speech.  Then the campaign can begin with 60 days until Election Day.

Just when it seemed like the campaign was going to settle into trench warfare McCain’s troops have given the flag to someone with fresh legs (it’s a sports reference guys - no sexual harassment intended) who is charging into the freshly formed battle lines of the Democratic Party.

Just when I thought it was going to be the old white guys against the young Black guy John McCain throws me a curve ball high and tight. I was just starting to lean in thinking I knew what they were about to deliver and whoosh, it grazed my chin! Instead of a hawk, instead of another wrinkled old dude, he brings in Sarah Palin the youngest newcomer on either ticket.

Since the 1950’s there have been two different leagues in Cyprus; the Cyrpus Football Federation (the KOP) and the Turkish Cypriot Football Federation. In the years preceding that there had been a single federation, the KOP, but this unity was disavowed when, in the unforgiving atmosphere of the 1950’s, the Turkish Cypriots were banned from playing in their stadiums and, as a result, left the league to establish a separate federation.

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has recently called for the unification of football in Cyprus. This proposed federation would fall under the currently existing KOP banner, which has been, since the 1950’s, a Greek Cypriot federation.

FIFA’s proposal mirrors the optimism that is currently circling around the September 2nd meeting of North Cyprus’s Mehmet Ali Talat and South Cyprus’ new left-wing leader Dimitris Christofias.
