Some people think that it’ enough to advertise here and there to get traffic, if you are under people’s noses, they will bear you in mind and your name will eventually become a brand. Others assume that creating super - ultra interesting content will result in Search Engines eventually picking your website and driving tons of visitors and other bloggers and site owners will start linking to you. Cool, but that takes quite a lot of time and if Google will decide to ban you for selling links or whatever reason — you will never really get anywhere with your “original content” if you were to build on SEO.
So, practically the only best and free way is creating free wordpress themes, making them so good so that people would want to scroll down and click on credits. This is probably the only thing i was doing recently.
