Ever since RSS was invented, all the bloggers, forum owners and other users of dynamic pages and CMS seem to implement it and avail of the wonders of site syndication.
The question is, is it really, really, really all that good? On the one hand, it brings traffic, as people have your site syndicated and see the updates instantly either on their browser or homepage. They see instant updates and click on the title getting back to your website over and over again.
On the other hand, what if the titles do not fascinate all that much, and just going over the summery at the homepage (say, google/ig) is enough and your subscriber will decide not to visit your blog or site at this occasion. Maybe if your blog was not syndicated, he would have dropped by every day, thirsty for some new entries and updates, while having it under his nose saves him time visiting.
This about it, it can really turn against you.
The only way to avoid RSS from decreasing your traffic, is to only allow summaries in the syndication, i.e. your subscriber will not be able to actually read the entire topic, only a small part of it, without visiting your website.
Another point that is important to remember is: give your topics / forum posts / blog entries an interesting title. The title itself should be enough to make the viewer want to click. For example, instead of saying “Vista Release” (we all know by now that it was released, you won’t blow anyone by saying it again), give your entry a more descriptive, provoking title, such as… “Vista’s bug results in 1 Million dollar loss for MS“. See my point? Wouldn’t you want to read now?
In other words… Don’t let this nice orange button save your lazy visitors hassle of dropping by.
